The Royan International Research Award (RIRA) was founded by the late director of the Royan Institute, Dr. Saeid Kazemi Ashtiani, with the aim of promoting scientific excellence by encouraging researchers, recognizing their contributions, and fostering an environment conducive to the exchange of knowledge and experience. Dr. Kazemi envisioned this award as a means of uniting researchers and motivating them to pursue high-quality, innovative research. Since its inception, the award has gained increasing prestige, reflected in the rising number of submissions and the continual enhancement of their scientific quality. Research papers are rigorously evaluated by the award’s national and international jury boards, whose dedication and expertise are gratefully acknowledged. Each year, distinguished researchers who have made outstanding contributions to addressing challenges in the fields of reproductive biomedicine and stem cell science are formally recognized and honored. The winners are invited to attend the Award Ceremony on the designated day, where they will receive a certificate, the Royan Award symbol, and a cash prize. They are also invited to present their work at the Royan International Twin Congress, held alongside the Award Ceremony. Given the inherent diversity of research methodologies, implementations, and outcomes, directly comparing studies across different fields poses significant challenges. To address this, beginning with the eighth RIRA, equal prizes were awarded to winners representing various domains within reproductive biomedicine and stem cell research, including female infertility, ethics, andrology, embryology, reproductive imaging, reproductive genetics, stem cell biology and technology, regenerative medicine, and biotechnology. Since the twentieth RIRA, the selection procedure has been refined. Under the current format, one or two laureates are identified each year in the field of stem cell research, alongside one or two laureates in reproductive biomedicine. This revised approach underscores Royan’s core research priorities and serves to highlight exceptional scientific achievements in these two foundational disciplines.
